Leading Technology in Next Generation of Multimedia
Industry Now everybody predicts that the last ultimate
target of multimedia Industry will be stereoscopic multimedia.
Major stream of this industry will move from high-resolution
color screen to stereoscopic screen as it did from black and
white to color. General people eager to enjoy stereoscopic
contents. (Generally, the demand of stereoscopic movies is
much higher than that of stereoscopic games.) Basically, human
beings see images with eyes that are approximately 65mm apart
from one another. As a result, every person sees slightly
different 2D images from the left and right eyes. This "binocular
disparity" is one of the key components of stereoscopic
effect. The brain interprets these two images as one 3D image
unconsciously, and this is called 'Stereoscopic Image'.

For the growth of Stereoscopic multimedia industry, we need
both of plenty of good stereoscopic 3D contents and eye-strain-free
stereoscopic 3D display devices.
Generally, major activities in stereoscopic industry has been
focused on developing display device so far, like special
camera, special monitor, special glasses and etc. For home
users and gamers, typical device is cheap glasses like anaglyph
glasses or LCD shutter glasses. Nowadays, there¡¯re so many
auto-stereoscopic (3D view with naked eye in stead of special
glasses) display devices are commercially available, like
3D monitor, 3D cell-phone, 3D notebook and etc. More and more
electronic companies will release commercial 3D-LCD equipped
devices and 3D multimedia will be common in entertainment
and education market very soon.
Contents is the limitation of Stereoscopic 3D industry
However, it is well known that the most difficult problem
of this industry is the lack of stereoscopic contents. Just
a few film production companies like IMAX, Disney and professional
graphic companies are producing stereoscopic movies. And people
can enjoy those movies of which titles they even don¡¯t know,
only at special theater in amusement park. This unbalanced
situation is due to huge amount of stereoscopic contents manufacturing
cost which requires 10 to 20 times more money and time than
normal film production.
